RAR has and will always be privacy-focused. Our privacy & security team is always looking for issues in our software (RAR OS) and our partner's software. As of today, Eufy Technologies and Anker Innovations are no longer partners with RAR Group.
What happened?
Eufy has had multiple issues. It's no company without issues, of course. Unfortunately, Eufy has known and actively avoided or willingly made these issues. RAR Group and its subsidiary RAR, don't stand with Eufy's actions.
First strike
Back in 2023, Eufy admitted that their cameras which "stored videos locally" for "local protection", were not only stored in the cloud but also not end-to-end encrypted. Our privacy & security team immediately started looking into this bug so that we could see if we could do something on our part to help protect our users. In the end, we couldn't do anything more but decided to add more layers for security and a mandatory 2 step-verification. Eufy Technologies received a warning from RAR that their account would be suspended if they continued having vulnerability issues.
Second strike (today)
Today, after a long investigation (with help from one of our users), we've concluded that Eufy uses illegal advertisement practices with their new device - the Eufy Mach S1 Pro. With multiple practices against RAR's Fairplay for brands T&C, we've concluded that they are demoting competitor's products on RAR and RAR Marketplace so we are taking action. Eufy has compared its model with a very old one from its competitors in all of its showcases. Whilst this doesn't exactly break a rule that would get them a full-on ban, it would give them a warning and temporary removal of the affected products. They go beyond by saying that they have real reviews of real people when in reality they are fake. That could result in a permanent ban.
What are we doing?
We are committed to a safer, more fair, and more truthful world. We are taking serious action to prevent this from happening again. For starters, we are removing all of Eufy's products and extending their termination period. That's not all. As we want to prevent something like this from ever happening again, we are implementing a stricter process to verify companies, brands, and products to RAR. Similar rules are also coming to RAR Marketplace soon. Finally, we're introducing a brand new team - The Investigators - sounds fun, that will constantly monitor, investigate, and actively prevent not only this but other issues from happening. Think of them as homeland security. They're nice!
We'd like to thank you for joining us on this journey and hope you meet you again soon, hopefully for a better reason!
- Your RAR Team
PS: Oh, and Andy Minev helped us with this investigation, so special thanks.
